East Rowan’s Lizzie Weaver qualified for the individual state 3A championships to be held in Burlington this weekend.
Weaver defeated Vicki DiRinzi (NW Cabarrus), Claudia Oyaneder (Cox Mill) and Imani Fountain (Cox Mill) in the Midwest Regional held at Concord’s Les Myers Park.
n Gray Stone freshman Meghan Hedgepeth qualified at the West Regional in Elkin for the individual 1A state championships to be held in Cary this weekend.
Hedgepath won three regional matches.
n Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart AD Katie Meseroll announced that the boys basketball team will play 33 games this season and will participate in five tournaments.
It starts with the “Civil War” intrasquad game at the Dolphin Tank on 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The regular season starts with a game against Durham’s Walltown Tigers on Thursday.
Season highlights will include appearances in Winston-Salem’s Renegar Tournament, the Sacred Heart Tip-Off Tournament, the Jack Campell Hoops Classic after Thanksgiving, the Paul Mendez Christmas Tournament, and Charlotte’s Shamrock Tournament.
The Dolphins again will compete in the 10-team Central Carolinas Inter Scholastic Athletic Association.
Third-year players Spencer Storey, Reilly Gokey and Max Fisher lead a returning cast that accounted for 142 3-pointers last year.
Joseph Harrison, one of last year’s top scorers, also returns. Walker Latimer, Will Casmus, Arun Kelly-Rajan, Justin Boyd, Adam Habeeb, Bryan Reid and James Reiff round out the squad. Bob Burges and David Harrison coach the team. Walker Brown is the manager.
n Salisbury Academy tennis
Salisbury Academy’s girls tennis team finished a perfect season by beating Charlotte Prep 8-1.
Grace Steinman, Maria Capito, Emily Capito, Ann Fisher Lindsay, Juliana Anderson and Jordan McCall won singles matches.
Steinman-Emily Capito and Lindsay- Samantha Pritchard won in doubles.
Three of the top six will return next season for the Jaguars.
